Did Amazon really ax the text to audio feature?
I wrote to Amazon and said I would be returning the Kindle 2 I had just ordered, because we ordered it primarily for the text to audio feature. Amazon responded the that feature is “clearly legal.” They wrote: “Kindle can still read every newspaper, magazine, blog and book out loud to you, except if the book is disabled.” They predicted that most authors would not disable text to speech. What do you think? I do not want this expensive gadget if it does not have this feature, but I will have to make the decision soon if I am going to get my money back.
Amazon has provided a means to disable the “text to Speech” function.
The publisher of the content you purchase will have the option to disable it at their discretion. There is talk that some publishers can provide the feature for an additional charge when you purchase your content.
This does not effect content that you already purchased where the feature is already enabled. It will effect future purchases you make as you will have to determine if “Text to Speech” is enabled and/or available for an additional charge.
